American International Pictures was renowned for their low-budget sci-fi and horror movies, producing iconic films like Roger Corman and Vincent Price’s adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s works. The company was founded in 1954 by James H. Nicholson and Samuel Z. Arkoff, and they targeted teenage audiences by conducting focus group studies and recognizing changing trends. They produced beach party movies and spy spoof films in the mid-1960s, and to keep up with the distribution schedule, they would buy films from outside distributors. They also released many double features to attract audiences.
Herman Cohen, Alex Gordon, and Roger Corman were some of the notable producers who worked for American International Pictures. Cohen produced horror movies like “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” and “Blood of Dracula,” while Gordon produced “The She-Creature” and “Tormented.” Corman, who was known as the “King of the B-Movie,” produced and directed numerous films for the company, including “It Conquered the World” and “The Little Shop of Horrors.”
“The Evictors” was one of American International Pictures’ last productions before the company was merged into Filmways in 1980 and eventually into MGM. The film tells the story of a young couple, Ruth and Ben Watkins, who move into a farmhouse in Louisiana. They soon discover that the house has a dark history, and they become the target of a series of horrifying events.
As Ruth and Ben try to unravel the mystery behind the house, they uncover a string of murders that took place in the past. The film builds up to a chilling and suspenseful climax as the couple is forced to confront the evil that lurks within the house.
“The Evictors” features three noteworthy actors: Vic Morrow, who tragically died during the filming of “Twilight Zone: The Movie,” Jessica Harper, who reprised the role of Janet Majors (Janet Weiss) from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in “Shock Treatment” and has appeared in numerous TV shows, and Sue Ane Langdon, who played the role of Esther Bilchik in “UHF” and was widely recognized for her acting skills.
