In this entry, I take you on a deep dive into the world of public service announcements from The United States Department of Transportation. This unique collection of PSAs features a variety of topics aimed at promoting safer motoring and alternative modes of transportation in urban areas.
On one side of the record, listeners will find four “Sounds of Science” spots that highlight the latest technical developments in automobile safety and science at work. Meanwhile, the other side features the inauguration of their new “Other Ways” series, aimed at encouraging alternatives to the single occupancy automobile in urban areas. With air pollution, traffic, congestion, and energy crises all on the rise, this collection of PSAs remains as relevant today as it did when it was first released.
The PSAs were released under the authority of the Office of the Secretary of Transportation, which was led by Director of Public Affairs H. David Crowther at the time. Crowther was an advocate for alternative transportation methods, particularly carpooling. According to a New York Times article published on December 16, 1974, Crowther believed that carpooling could save the nation five billion gallons of gasoline a year and fight air pollution and urban congestion by taking 15 million cars off the highways. To promote carpooling, the Department of Transportation turned to the Advertising Council, which assigned its first council assignment to APCL&K, a Philadelphia agency. The agency came up with an upbeat and light approach that promoted the companionship and economy of carpooling.
